I talk to a lot of people who are getting started with Black Soldier Fly Larvae. On TikTok, on YouTube, in comments and DMs. The same five problems come up constantly.
Most of them are easy to fix once you understand what's going on inside the bin. But if you don't catch them, they'll wipe out your colony.
1. Adding Bedding Material
This is probably the most common one. People set up their bin and immediately add a layer of dirt, coconut coir, shredded cardboard, or some other bedding material on the bottom. It makes sense if you're thinking about it like a worm bin or a hamster cage, but BSFL aren't worms and they don't need bedding.
All you need in a BSFL bin is feedstock. Food scraps, spent grain, overripe fruit, whatever organic waste you're processing. That's it. The larvae eat the feedstock, and what comes out the other end is frass, a natural soil amendment you can use straight in your garden.
When you add bedding, you're creating a layer between the larvae and their food. You're also adding something that holds moisture in ways you can't control, which can create anaerobic pockets at the bottom of your bin. Anaerobic means no oxygen, and that's where the smell starts and the larvae start dying.

2. Blocking Larvae From Leaving (Without Fixing Why They're Leaving)
When larvae start crawling out of your bin, the instinct is to block them. Seal the gaps, tape the edges, put a weight on the lid. I get it, nobody wants grubs all over the garage floor.
But larvae don't leave a healthy bin. If they're trying to escape, something in that bin is wrong. Usually it's an environment problem, the bin is too hot, too wet, too acidic, or there's no airflow (more on that in a second). They're leaving because staying means dying.
So when you block the exits without fixing the root cause, you're trapping larvae in conditions that are killing them. You end up with a bin full of dead larvae and a smell you won't forget.
The fix is to figure out why they're leaving. Check the temperature. Check the moisture, your substrate should clump when you squeeze it but not drip. Smell it. If it smells like ammonia or rotten eggs, it's gone anaerobic and the conditions inside the bin are suffocating the larvae instead of supporting them. Fix the environment first, and they'll stay on their own.
(One exception: prepupae are supposed to leave. When larvae darken to brown or black and stop eating, they're ready to pupate. That's self-harvesting, not escaping. If only the dark ones are leaving, your bin is working perfectly.)
3. Too Much Feedstock
I know this sounds weird. The whole point of BSFL is that they eat waste, right? So more food should be better?
Not really. If your bin has more than about four inches of substrate in it, the larvae at the bottom are probably dying. When feedstock stacks up, the bottom layer compresses under the weight of everything above it. Air can't reach it. Moisture builds up. It goes anaerobic fast.
The larvae in that bottom layer are suffocating in a wet, airless mess while you're piling more food on top. You can't see them, so you don't know it's happening until the bin starts smelling terrible or you notice your population shrinking.
Feed in smaller amounts and let the larvae work through it before adding more. Your feedstock should be mostly consumed within 24 to 36 hours. If it's still sitting there after two days, you added too much and your larvae can't keep up. Scale back and let them catch up.
4. No Airflow
This is the one that causes the most problems, and it's connected to almost everything else on this list. Poor airflow leads to anaerobic conditions, which leads to ammonia buildup, which leads to larvae trying to escape (mistake #2), which leads to you blocking the exits and trapping them in a toxic environment. It's a chain reaction.
BSFL are aerobic. They need oxygen. Your bin needs ventilation, holes in the sides, a mesh-covered opening, something that lets air move through. A sealed bin with no airflow will go anaerobic no matter how careful you are with your feeding schedule.
Do me a favor and drill some holes in the upper sides of your bin. Mesh them to keep pests out if you need to, but get air moving through there. If your bin smells bad, airflow is almost always part of the problem.
5. Putting the Bin in the Sun
Your BSFL bin should never be in direct sunlight. The bin has a lid, right? Well that lid turns the whole thing into an oven when the sun hits it. Larvae are already generating their own metabolic heat, a dense colony can run 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient temperature on its own. Add direct sun on top of that and you can cook your entire colony on an afternoon that never felt that hot to you.
BSFL do best between about 77°F and 95°F. Above that, they start dying. In direct sun, especially with a dark-colored bin, you can blow past that threshold fast.
Put your bin in full shade. Under a tree, under an overhang, on the north side of a building. It costs you nothing and it's one of the easiest things you can do to keep your larvae alive.
I know what you're thinking, but the adult flies need sun to mate, not the larvae. The breeding setup is a completely different thing. Something like The Coop handles egg collection. Your bin where the larvae live and eat? That stays in the shade.
