Circular by design

Insect farming turns organic waste you already have into protein and fertilizer, without a feed supply chain.

Build your bin your way.

The Blue Grub Farms Bin Kit is a complete BSFL composting kit — everything you need to transform any standard plastic container (tote, bucket, etc.) into a highly efficient, self-harvesting Black Soldier Fly Larvae composting system. Design a system that fits your space, your materials, and your budget — or if building isn't your thing, go fully pre-built with the Grubhouse.

What's in the box

  1. Prepupae Harvest Ramp: This specially designed ramp allows mature larvae (prepupae) to instinctively crawl out of the food source and up to a collection insert. It's the key to automatic, clean harvesting — no more sifting or digging. Newly redesigned to be sturdier and more durable, with a flared end that gives prepupae more surface to find and makes it easy to seat the ramp flush against the bin wall — where they naturally climb — without cutting the ramp hole into a corner.
  2. Collection Insert: Sits outside your main bin, ready to receive the self-harvested prepupae from the ramp. Just lift and collect.
  3. Adult Fly Entrance Pod (the "Bintrance"): Guides newly emerged adult Black Soldier Flies into the breeding area, helping to keep your colony contained and focused on reproduction. Now built taller with a canopy over the top, so rain and irrigation water can't run down into the fly entrance holes and soak your bin. The branches lock on with a secure nut joint for durability.
  4. The "Egg Tree" Laying Surfaces: Modeled after nature, these surfaces — complete with decorative "leaves" — mimic the ideal narrow, protected spaces where female BSFL prefer to lay their eggs. This maximizes egg production, ensuring the constant, sustainable growth of your colony.

You'll also need

  • A tote with a solid lid — the kit fits any size tote. I wouldn't go under 12 gallons, and if you go bigger than about 27 gallons you may want two kits. You provide the bin.
  • Coco coir for bedding and moisture control. Not included, but we sell the bricks if you don't have some.
  • Your initial starter batch of larvae, plus some organic waste to feed them.

Setup takes under an hour — read the setup guide before your kit arrives.

How it works

  • Customize Your Colony: Use the container size and material that works best for your setup.
  • Maximize Egg Laying: The proprietary Egg Tree design is proven to boost your colony's reproductive success.
  • Automate Harvesting: The Prepupae Ramp lets your colony harvest itself — no digging, no sorting.
  • Sustainable Loop: BSFL eat your kitchen scraps and produce nutrient-dense larvae plus frass. This kit closes the composting loop.

Recently improved. Based on real customer feedback, the kit got an overhaul: a taller entrance with a built-in canopy that keeps rain and irrigation water out of the fly holes, a locking-nut joint so the branches stay put instead of snapping off, and a sturdier harvest ramp with a flared end that seats easily against the bin wall — right where prepupae climb out.

Why it works

Built around how BSFL actually behave.

🦴

40× more calcium than mealworms

BSFL have a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio ideal for reptiles, amphibians, and birds — one of the only feeder insects carrying more calcium than phosphorus.

🪱

Self-harvesting

When prepupae are ready to pupate, they climb up and out of the bin on their own. You collect them dry and clean.

♻️

Two things out of one bin

BSFL eat your kitchen scraps. The frass they leave behind is a rich organic fertilizer for the garden.

🌡️

An open outdoor system

A BSFL bin lives outside in the shade with wild flies coming and going. Airflow and moisture do most of the work.
